The Burmese Cat: Protecting Your Burmese From Household Dangers

Many people do not realize that common things within their home can be dangerous to their Burmese cat. Before bringing your kitty into your home, go through and look for anything that may be included in this article. Pick them up and put them away where your new fuzzy family member cannot get to them. This ensures that they will not inadvertently get into something they shouldn't.

It is recommended that you keep your Burmese cat indoors as they have less than optimal survival instincts. If you have plants in your house, research them to see if they are toxic to pets. The same goes for anything in your garden on the off chance your cat gets outside. Easter lily, yew, oleander, and azalea have been shown to be fatal to cats that have eaten them.

Keep all of our cleaning supplies somewhere that your Burmese cannot get to and keep your kitty out of areas you are cleaning with chemicals. Some of the chemicals in household cleaners can irritate your Burmese's stomach or burn their mucous membranes in the mouth, esophagus, and stomach if they should happen to lick any of it. Always rinse areas treated with chemicals to make sure they are properly cleaned up and not attractive to your cat. Pest baits and traps should be placed well out of your cat's reach as they contain sweet smelling toxins that will be pleasing to your cat.

Chocolate is highly toxic to cats so never leave it anywhere that is tempting to your Burmese cat. This includes baking chocolate. Pennies, mothballs, potpourri, dryer sheets, cigarette butts, coffee grinds, batteries, alcohol, and dishwasher detergent can all be toxic to your cat if ingested in high quantities. Oil, gasoline, and antifreeze should also be kept well away from your cat. A teaspoon of antifreeze will be fatal to a cat that weighs seven pounds or less. Use lawn products and weed killers that are pet friendly or keep your cat off of the grass until the products have completely dried.

Human medications should be stored in containers that your Burmese cannot get in to or up in a cabinet. Do not give your cat any medications unless your vet prescribes them, and only use flea care products or in your house that is recommended by your vet. Do not use dog products on your cat and if you have to spray or defog your house, take your cat outside on a lead for the appropriate amount of recommended time.

By being aware of what is hanging around your home, you can make it make it pet friendly and protect you Burmese cat so that they can live for many years as your dearest companion.
