The Burmese Cat: Tips For Purchasing Your Pedigreed Burmese

Purchasing a purebred cat takes more than just going to a cattery and finding the kitten you like. It takes doing some research on the breed that you wish to adopt. Just because you like the way the cat looks, you need to know what kid of temperament they have. Some cats are high-strung or extremely temperamental. Others, like the Burmese, are very easy going, laid back and affectionate. Make sure that you only family situation can facilitate a slightly more active cat if that is what you are interested in adopting. Read trade magazines such as Cat Fancy and talk to someone from the major cat associations to get more information on the breed you are planning on bringing home.

If there is anyone in you home that are allergic to cats, you will want to look into getting a cat with short hair that is fixed. Burmese cats are perfect for someone like this since their coats are short and glossy and the do not shed a lot. If the person who is allergic to cats is cleared by the doctor to get one, then a Burmese would be a good option. The do not need a lot of grooming outside of what they take care of themselves.

Consider what type of schedule you will be keeping when you think about adopting a Burmese kitten. If you work full-time and your cats will be home alone during the day, you may want to adopt two. This way they will keep each other company. Even though cats are solitary creatures by nature, kittens can get bored. And with boredom comes trouble. With another cat to interact with, your new Burmese kitten will stay out of trouble.

When you find the type of cat pedigreed cat, such as the Burmese, that you wish to adopt, the next step is to kind a breeder. It's probably best to find the breeder through a registered cat association or breed club. The association membership will assure you that the breeder has met strict requirements in order to be part of the organization. This assures you that they are required to provide quality care to the cats they breed. These associations will also allow you to hold them accountable if they do not honor the agreement you have made with them for the cat. Make sure you read each communication with the breeder you have chosen carefully and file them in a safe place in case you ever need them. Ask the breeder you have chosen for references and ask to meet them, their cats, and kittens face-to-face to ensure that they are in good health and well cared for.

If you decide to adopt a Burmese kitten, be prepared to wait for one as not all breeders will have kittens 'in stock'. Most of the will ask for a refundable deposit somewhere around $100. This will hold your kitten until it is old enough to come home. Always keep documented proof of the deposit and clear, mutually agreed upon terms of what is and is not refundable. When you get your new Burmese kitten, you should also get a set of pedigree documents, a shot record, and a written health guarantee so that if something happens to your new family member, you have some legal recourse to recoup the money you have spent.
